Most families think they need points, credit cards, or complicated travel hacks to save money on flights.
The truth?
You don’t.
There’s a much simpler way to consistently find cheaper flights, even when you’re booking for a full family.
It’s not about chasing deals or getting lucky.
It’s about using a simple system to know when a price is actually a good deal, when to wait, and when to book.
Want the exact step-by-step system we use to find cheap flights every time?

learn what a “good price” actually is
know exactly when to book (and when to wait)
avoid the common mistakes that cost families hundreds
Why Flights Feel So Expensive for Families
Booking flights for a family is completely different than booking flights for one person. When you multiply airfare across multiple seats, even small price differences add up quickly. A flight that seems “reasonable” at $350 per person suddenly becomes a $1,750 purchase for a family of five.
For a long time, we assumed this was just the reality of family travel. We planned carefully and usually took one trip per year. But once we started understanding how flight prices actually work and using a simple search system, everything changed.
Instead of guessing whether a price was good or waiting for a perfect deal, we started recognizing opportunities to book confidently.
Today our family travels much more often, not by spending more, but by booking flights differently.
The Two Things That Actually Determine Flight Prices
Most flight advice focuses on tricks, credit card points, or secret deals. But flight prices are actually driven by two simple factors:

WHERE YOU GO (Destination)

WHEN YOU GO (Dates)
The more flexibility you have with these two factors, the more opportunities you’ll see for lower prices.
Flexibility doesn’t mean being spontaneous or disorganized. It simply means letting prices guide your options before committing to a specific destination or exact dates. Instead of deciding exactly where and when you want to go and hoping the price works, the strategy flips the process:
Start with what’s affordable first.
5 Common Mistakes Families Make When Booking Flights

Searching only one airport

Booking the first price you see

Ignoring flexible travel dates

Not knowing what a “good price” looks like

Overlooking hidden costs
Google Flights Makes The Search Process Easy
We rely on Google Flights for nearly every flight search.
It makes it easy to:

Compare airlines quickly

See price patterns across dates

Explore destinations within your budget
Two features are especially useful for families:
Explore Map
This lets you see affordable destinations across an entire region instead of searching one city at a time.
Flexible Dates
Sometimes shifting a trip by just one day can save hundreds of dollars.

Our Simple 6-Step System for Finding Cheap Flights
This is the exact system we use every time we book flights, but the full breakdown (with real examples and exact tools) is all inside the guide.
STEP 1: Define Your Travel Window
Start by identifying your possible travel window.
Some families can move dates freely. Others are working around school schedules or specific events.
Even small flexibility, like leaving a day earlier or returning a day later, can unlock meaningful savings.
STEP 2: Open Google Flights and Set Your Basics
Enter:
Number of passengers
Departure airports
Possible travel dates
Always enter the correct number of travelers first so the prices reflect the real total for your family.

STEP 3: Choose Your Flexibility Strategy
Not every trip starts the same way. We typically follow one of three approaches.
Totally flexible trips
Let price guide the destination.
Somewhat flexible trips
Adjust departure and return dates slightly to unlock better pricing.
Mostly fixed trips
Search directly for your destination and track price changes.

STEP 4: Filter for Family-Friendly Flights
The cheapest flight isn’t always the best one for families.
Instead of chasing the lowest price, we filter results to prioritize:
Reasonable departure times
Nonstop flights when possible
Manageable connections
A slightly higher price is often worth it for a smoother travel day.

STEP 5: Compare the Price to Typical Ranges
Once we find a flight option we like, we compare the price to typical ranges to see whether it’s: Average, Good, or Great. This removes second-guessing and makes booking decisions much easier.
One of the hardest parts of booking flights is knowing whether a price is actually a good deal.
I created a simple Flight Price Benchmark Cheat Sheet that shows the typical price ranges for domestic and international flights so you can quickly tell whether a price is average, good, or a great deal.

STEP 6: Book With Confidence
If a flight:

Fits our family’s schedule

Falls within our target price range

Passes our comfort check
We book it.
Waiting for the absolute lowest price often backfires, especially when booking multiple seats.
A strong deal you book is better than a perfect deal you miss.
